Installing vmware server from the howto’s on the net, proved not to be very useful. It went all great untill you reach the step to enter your cd key:

/usr/lib/vmware/bin/vmware-vmx: error while loading shared libraries: libX11.so.6: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
The serial number XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX is invalid

I removed the serial number of course. You can see where the problem exist. How to solve this? Very easy. I’ll put a step to step install procedure here. Let’s move on:

sudo apt-get install build-essential linux-headers-`uname -r`
sudo apt-get install xinetd
sudo apt-get install libxt-dev
sudo apt-get install libxtst6
sudo apt-get install libxrender-dev
sudo apt-get install libxi-dev

This should be all. The next thing to do will be installing the vmware server. You can install it from the tar.gz file or using apt-get. I’ll let you to decide that. But for information:

Apt-get way:

sudo echo “deb http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu feisty-commercial main” >> /etc/apt/sources.list
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install vmware-server

Start vmware by typing in the console: ‘vmware’

Tar.gz way:

Download the tar file first, then:

tar xvzf /Path/To/VMware-server-1.0.4-56528.tar.gz
cd vmware-server-distribudo
sudo ./vmware-install.pl

Start vmware by typing in the console: ‘vmware’
